This site was created by Brandy (Zeek) Minter, former canoe racer and teacher, now a wife, mother, photographer, and recreational paddler.
Back in 2009, just for fun, my husband and I Googled “how to canoe” and discovered that there was tons of info about kayaking out there, not so much about canoeing.
What we did find on canoeing was all written descriptions, not many pictures. As a very visual person, these instructions were confusing to me, and I already know how to canoe!
For over a decade I was blessed by the rare opportunity to take canoe lessons from an extraordinary lady named Kathy Derrick. As a long time canoe racer, she taught kids how to canoe with a level of excellence that has developed quite a reputation in the state of Texas. We learned far more than just canoeing technique from Mrs. Derrick though, she invested in the lives of her students in many ways.
There’s an indescribable feeling you get when you’re paddling on a river, away from civilization. The sky is so huge, the river so powerful, and you and your little canoe seem a bit like an ant on a floating matchstick. It’s an awe inspiring perspective of Nature.
Mrs. Derrick introduced me to the joy of canoeing, and the unique perspective of nature from the vantage point of a canoe. This site is my tribute to all the time, effort, and love she poured into my life, and the lives of so many others.
